An emotion usually represents an amplified energized thought pattern, and because of its often-over powering energetic charges, it is not easy initially to stay present enough to be able to watch it. It wants to take you over, and it usually succeeds - unless there is enough presence in you.

Eckhart Tolle, The power of Now.

Our Emotions

Our emotions are formed by our thoughts, and by the judgments we make about these thoughts. We often hold onto negative thoughts and emotions which prevent us from enjoying the emotional freedom and joy that we could be experiencing. Examination of these negative emotions and feelings will often provide the freedom needed to let go of them and allow for new and positive emotions to become our reality.

Holding on to painful memories and thoughts isolates us from others and leads to loneliness and despair. We often cling to negative thoughts and emotions that involve regrets, losses, fears, and disappointments. These attachments cause depression, anxiety, and anguish. It is important to recognize our negative thoughts and emotions and understand why we are experiencing them, thus allowing us to move from denial to acceptance and finally release.

Deciding to let go of the past is easy. Committing ourselves to moving on from our painful memories and negative emotions is simple. The act of doing so is the difficult part. Our conviction to negative memories and thoughts makes it difficult to let go. We fear missing out on some positive experience, or the loss of the time and energy we have invested. When we recognize why our mind resists letting go, we can start the process of breaking down this resistance. Change is scary, we prefer the status quo, even if it is misery for us.

Making the decision to let go involves several steps: first we need to acknowledge the source of our unhappiness. Second, we need to be motivated. Third, we need determination. Fourth, we need purpose and optimism.
